Ikpoto Effiat HCDT Constructs Triangle Road Network on TomShot Island
This project demonstrates Ikpoto Effiat HCDT’s holistic approach to development—focusing not only on immediate needs but also laying infrastructure that supports future growth. The triangle road network is expected to stimulate commerce, attract investment, and reinforce community resilience.
Introduction In line with its mandate to drive sustainable development and improve the living standards of the Effiat community, the Ikpoto Effiat Host Community Development Trust (HCDT) has successfully completed the construction of a triangle road network on TomShot Island. This strategic project reflects the Trust’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, boosting accessibility, and creating pathways for long-term community empowerment. About TomShot Island TomShot Island, located within the Cross River estuary near Ibaka Bay, is home to one of the world’s richest fishing grounds. The island is also notable for the Tom Shot Bank Field, an oil-rich resource base within the PPL244 (formerly OML-14) block managed by Tulcan Exploration and Production. Despite its natural wealth, the island has long faced infrastructure challenges that limit mobility, economic activities, and access to essential services. The Triangle Road Network Project The triangle road network constructed by Ikpoto Effiat HCDT addresses one of the island’s most pressing needs: reliable, all-season roads that link key areas within the community. Scope of Work: Grading, construction, and surfacing of three major interconnected roads forming a triangular link across the island. Objective: To ease movement of people, goods, and fishing supplies while providing better access to markets, schools, healthcare, and economic zones. Beneficiaries: Local fishermen, traders, women, schoolchildren, and partner businesses operating within the island. Impact and Benefits The new road network has already begun transforming daily life on TomShot Island: Improved Mobility: Residents can now travel safely between settlements, particularly during the rainy season when flooding previously made roads impassable. Economic Growth: Fishermen and traders can transport their catch and goods faster, reducing spoilage and opening access to wider markets. Social Development: Easier access to schools, clinics, and community centers improves education and healthcare outcomes. Partnership Opportunities: The road infrastructure lays the foundation for future partnerships with oil operators, investors, and government agencies. Community Voice Local residents of TomShot Island have expressed appreciation for this intervention, highlighting how improved access is already reducing the time it takes to move fish from landing sites to markets. Women traders in particular note that the road has boosted their ability to sell goods quickly and safely. Future Outlook This project demonstrates Ikpoto Effiat HCDT’s holistic approach to development—focusing not only on immediate needs but also laying infrastructure that supports future growth. The triangle road network is expected to stimulate commerce, attract investment, and reinforce community resilience. Take Home The Trust remains dedicated to driving impactful projects that align with its mission of empowerment, sustainability, and transparency. Partners, donors, and well-wishers are encouraged to join Ikpoto Effiat HCDT in shaping a more connected, prosperous future for Effiat and its surrounding communities.
